Are New York City Passes and Discounts really a Savings?

By: Melissa T

As a resident of New York and being very susceptible towards the tourist scams, I always have been doubtful on the credibility of many New York City Passes and whether these should be made available? Yes, at many occasions they could be the best way of savings however you need to be assured that you are making correct assessment of the New York City passes and also be aware of the hidden costs if any.

While you are making plans for vacations, many questions can come up in your mind that you should be aware with most of them like:

  • At the Empire State Building, where you would like to visit? Do you intend going to the 102nd floor indoor observatory or on the 86th floor watching movies indoors and outdoors? You can visit 86th floor with all the passes but for the 102nd floor you need to pay extra charges.
  • For the American Museum of Natural History, you have to decide if you are visiting Planetarium or Space Show which everyone suggests is the best. Here if you have New York Pass or even New York City Explorer Pass, you have to pay 20 dollars extra.
  • Ask yourself if you have been able to visit any of the museums on their Free or Pay-As-You-Wish Days and Times? And, are you aware which museums are generally recommended- museums that run on donation or ones that have admission tickets?
  • Do you prefer going on a site visit on a tourist bus and what would be the best package for the same?
  • How many days you are going to spend or with whom you are travelling? Is it if you are traveling with someone who does not have capacity or inclination to see four to five attractions in a day? It is no doubt true that visiting four to five tourist places in a day is really very hectic and is not possible with the young children or anybody who is not able to walk or stand for six to eight hours every day.
  • If you are planning to visit Statue of Liberty then will you spend more time there or will you just be going there in a Ferry and returning. It is always best to book tickets for the museum much in advance as all the tickets can be sold out if you are late. There is no attraction pass to see the inside of the Statue of Liberty except for the Ferry Ride to see Liberty Grounds.
