What a Bespoke Suit is all About

A bespoke suit or a tailored suit has long been a sign of the business elite. The bespoke tailor will cut mens suits as per each individual and they are made with the best of craftsmanship. These custom suits come with the best quality as well as fit and although you might have had to pay a big price tag it was well worth the extra money. But today, with the arrival of digital technology and overabundance of skilled labor, custom suit prices have come down drastically and are a lot more affordable even to the common man.

And high end retailers like Saks and Nordstroms have seen the popularity of the bespoke suit going up even though the luxury purchases might have come down as a result of the tough economy. And although the sale of ready made suits has come down, the custom suit industry has been growing steadily but surely. The bespoke tailor will give you the perfect fit so much so you will never think of going back to readymade clothes again. It is the made to measure suits alone that will give you the best fit ever and nobody will disagree on this.

Made to measure suits, custom suits and the bespoke suit are the three levels of suits that are made for a particular person. Each covers a totally different philosophy and process in the making of the custom suit; however, these terms are often used interchangeably. Bespoke which forms the top rung of custom tailoring is most often wrongly used and London tailors may often provide made to measure suits or custom suits. The word bespoke comes from the streets of Savile Row in London, which consists of a row of shops well known since the 19th century for the tailors who make some of the most remarkable custom military uniforms besides custom suits. It is said that the bespoke tailor London would inform their customers that a particular fabric was not in stock any more as it had “been spoken for” already.

Today, bespoke suit mean the best quality of hand made craftsmanship. The bespoke tailor puts in his best efforts to make the mens suits and wedding suits perfect. The master tailor or the pattern cutter should first measure the person for the mens suits. If you are measured by someone else like the sales person or a tailor who is not involved directly in creating your suit then it will not be a bespoke suit, it will be a custom suit or a made to measure suit.

The bespoke suit begins as a pattern which is hand drawn and needs several fittings along the way using a lightly sewn garment in order to perfect the pattern. Made to measure suits begin from a readymade pattern which is then adjusted to your size while the custom suit is provided to you as a completed garment without any trial fittings. If you have not been fitted with a lightly sewn garment then you can be sure that yours is not a bespoke suit nor is your tailor a bespoke tailor.
