On Dec. 20, 1860, delegates of the state’s secession convention met at St. Andrew’s Hall on Broad Street and approved an ordinance to secede from the Union. The Empire Wedding Dresseswas 169-0. We, the people of the State of South Carolina, in convention assembled, do declare and ordain, and it is hereby declared and ordained, That the ordinance adopted by us in convention on the twenty-third day of May, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-eight, whereby the Constitution of the United States of America was ratified, and also all acts and parts of acts of the General Assembly of this State ratifying amendments of the said Constitution, are hereby repealed; and that the union now subsisting between South Carolina and other States, under the name of the ‘United States of America,’ is hereby dissolved.
Done at Charleston the twentieth day of December, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty.’Masters of Foxhounds Association of America found the earliest record of hounds imported to North America was on June 30, 1650, when Robert Brooke arrived in Maryland with his family and hounds. By the early 1700’s, foxhunting was increasing rapidly in Maryland and Virginia. The earliest surviving record of American foxhunting by an organized hunt is the pack instituted by Thomas, Sixth Lord Fairfax in 1747 in northern Virginia. Records about early hunting come from letters written by Lord Fairfax and the diaries of George Washington. Washington was an ardent foxhunter who owned his own pack of hounds, and his diaries are laced with references to foxhunts near the nation’s capital.

When hounds do not chase the fox to an earth, the vast majority of times hounds lose the scent and that ends the hunt.
