Kids will not only learn how to make the best looking
The Dynamic Smooth Family, and TiJonne Reyes will bring their considerable talents to the historic Dew Drop Social and Benevolent Jazz Hall for an annual Christmas concert Saturday, sponsored by the Friends of the Dew Drop and the city of Mandeville. The traditional candlelightWedding Gloves will be from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Dew Drop in the 400 block of Lamarque Street. Admission is $10, and tickets will only be sold at the door.
The Smooth family is a nationally known Gospel group that began more than 30 years ago in Slidell. Rosa Lee Deflanders Smooth grew up singing at the Macedonia Baptist Church off U.S. 11 northeast of Slidell where her father, the late E. Lee Deflanders, was pastor for many years. After her daughter, Denise Smooth Francis, asked if the family could form a gospel singing group, Rosa Lee Smooth enlisted her late husband, her children and relatives, and over the years their stature as one of the area’s premiere gospel groups grew, with appearances annually in the Gospel tent at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival produced by Shell.
The Rev. Cynthia Plummer, has taken over management of the family singing group since her death of her mother, Rosa Lee, in 2002. Other members include Plummer’s brother, the Rev. Donald Smooth and his wife Nelwyn Smooth; Mavis Smooth, widow of another brother, the late Wilbert Smooth and their two children Marquita Smooth and J.J. Taylor along with Denise Francis and L..C. Plummer.
TiJonne Reyes, who records for Blue Chip Records and American Sound Records, was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2000. Reyes of Slidell, began as a back-up singer for the legendary Louis Prima and was a featured vocalist for the original Vince Vance and the Valiants. One of the area’s most acclaimed contemporary jazz singers, she now leads her own bands, ForPlay and The TiJonne Reyes Jazz Trio. She will be fronting her band ForPlay at the Dew Drop.
Beverages will be available at the Dew Drop show along with merchandise and food prepared for a fee by the First Free Mission Baptist Church Women’s Auxiliary, next door to the Dew DropShare handcrafted arts and crafts inspired by the quaint qualities of the New Orleans region. For two days 270 local artists will offer everything from original paintings, glassware and ceramics to unique jewelry, children’s fashions, and metal sculptures.
