The Republic of Costa Rica embodies a rich heritage of music that has captivated the hearts of many around the world. In fact, Costa Rican music has influenced North American club music and has roots within popular takes on British pop and rock music. The music of Costa Rica is often fast past. It embodies upbeat tempos for many styles of dancing, including salsa, reggae and meringue. Other popular dance types also include the cumbia and traditional folkloric dances such as Guanacasteco and La yeguita. Yet, many tourists enjoy seeing the colorful, glitzy and sensual dances of Botijuela Tamborita, Bachata and Cambute.

Modern dances now embody Costa Rica music such as ska, soca and pop. Even with these modern styles of rhythmic expression, the music of Costa Rica takes its roots from several distinct cultures. For instance, the native calypso music of Costa Rica derives from the popular-calypso music of Trinidad. The music of Costa Rica was also exposed to Mexican heritage music. Although its twist in music style has influenced many modern British bands, the music of Costa Rico original takes its origin from European roots. Even with this turn of two-way influence, a large portion of Costa Rican music is also derived from African rhythms, and their own native take on dance music.

Many consider the music of Costa Rican to be a luring and catchy genre, especially because of the unique use of rhythmic instrumentation. In effect, its African roots began with the use of the sinkit percussion instrument. However, some of its native influences for instruments come from Costa Rica’s neighboring countries like Central America. Many traditional folkloric ensembles from Costa Rica involve using the central American marimba instrument. Ocarinas are another ancient influential instrument of Costa Rica that was used in folk heritage songs and native ceremonies.

Nevertheless, African music and Afro-Caribbean music has the vast majority of influence over the music of Costa Rico, especially because of rumba, calypso and many cultural blends that derive from the Caribbean. Furthermore, tourists and natives cannot forget the sensual genre of the classic music that is still alive today. In fact, the Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional of Costa Rica has received international recognition and is popular in Costa Rica and in North America. Today, the music of Costa Rica is melting pot of vibrant culture that spans from jazz, Afro-Caribbean calypso and rock music. Although Costa Rican music has moved on to cover genres such as pop, reggaeton, and hip hop, its cultural roots will always continue to thrive within its ensembles.
