Common Costume Malfunctions

Dance recitals rely on good costumes to create the mood of a well qualified dance performance. Costumes are a vital part of dance recitals because they are meant to enhance the beautiful choreography of a dancer. However, costumes don’t always have the flawless success that dancers hope for.

Costumes can have malfunctions from time to time. Most of the time this is due to lack of proper preparation. It is important for dancers to do trial runs before any performance to try prevent malfunctions from happening.

Even with proper preparation, however, malfunctions can still occur. They don’t always function as perfectly as we have planned and hoped. Malfunctions are an embarrassing, though somewhat common, problem dancers may experience during dance recitals and performances.

A common blunder happens when a dancer has an object on his or her head as she dances that falls off during the dance, such as a crown or a hat. When you have a costume that requires something on your head, even if its just a bandanna, make certain that you have it secured tightly on your head. Having a hat slip off your head is distracting so make sure you do a dress rehearsal to see how secure it will need to be on the day of the performance.

Watch out for any material that may catch on another fabric or costume. Se quines have a bad habit of catching. Try using fabrics or other embellishments that are soft and don’t grab on to items easily.

Be certain to check for the elasticity of costumes waistbands before you perform. Skirts have a tendency to slide down if they are not tightly fitted, especially older costumes. If this problem happens to you, be certain to get it pinned securely so that there will not be any repeat performances.

Another common complaint are runs in tights. Runs in tights can easily be seen by the audience, and can be very distracting. Make certain to bring extra tights in case this happens to you.

Finally, be careful with costumes that have items that can easily fall off. An example of this type of costume mishap are beads from a necklace that breaks mid performance. Double check your costume for items that can cause spills and disrupt the performance. Remember, find a balance with a costume that will enhance the choreography not hinder it.
