The concept and the practice have long been accepted in the homeschooling communities. Many children who have traveled extensively or who were kept at home for their education participated in distance learning programs. With the internet making information ever easier to attain, this concept is now available for both undergrad and graduate classes. You can earn a degree at home.
If you were going to a classroom environment, you would select the university you would attend through a selection process. You would weigh the cost of the school against the quality of the education. Long distance learning programs are no different. Some are better than others. Few are not accredited, but just in case you should double check anyway.
You have the option to blend your educational experience if you want. Some people prefer to go to a classroom for their master’s education while others prefer to learn exclusively online. There are those who choose a university close to home so they can take one class in the classroom and take the remainder of their courses online. Almost all accredited universities these days have a Blackboard program, which enables students to participate fully in class discussions, turn in assignments, and take exams all through the internet.
Disadvantages of Distance Learning
1. Technology problems
Most distance learning programs take advantage of computer technology. You may need to upgrade your computer if your computer system does not meet the requirements of online learning system. The students are expected to have the basic knowledge of computer and internet so that they know how to access and navigate through the online learning system.
2. It does not offer immediate feedback
Since most distance learning classes are asynchronous, where instructors and students may not logon to the online class at the same time, you will not get immediate feedback or responses if you have any question that need attention from instructors.
3. Its certifications or degrees may not be acknowledged by all employers
Although online learning has become so popular and widely accept in the job market, there is still a small portion of employers don’t really recognized the value of distance learning program.
