Tips On iep Goals That Can Help In Your Child’s Progress

IEP also known as individual educational program is basically a set of written educational plan I.e. iep goals. These goals help in your child’s progress and it also strengthens the bond with his parents and teachers. The goals of iep are usually developed during the meetings, when parents and the concerned educational personal meet. Here are few tips that will help you in mainstreaming the program so that your child steps in towards progress.

1.    As a parent it is very important that you understand what your child needs and mention all the points including his social behavior, daily living skills and his educational interests in the iep meeting. These points will help in setting goals that can benefit your child.
2.    You must also make a note of people who are going to provide iep goals to your child and evaluate his progress, towards the new skills for grooming.
3.    You must also make sure that the iep has a note of any kind of past training that had been beneficial to your child. This can include any kind of a home training provided by you or may be by the teachers in school in the past years. If any other person apart from the parent had been helping the child to attain success, then you should also take the person to the meeting, as his or her suggestion can play an important role while setting iep goals.
4.    You should be in regular contact with the teachers, therapists and other specialists who work in hand to hand with your child. If you do not get time to meet them personally, you can call them or get in touch with them through e-mail and know about your child’s progress. Your regular contact with them will help you discuss critical issues that have been ignored or have arisen during iep.
5.    Try to read the iep goals and understand the kind of training that is being provided, also try and practice some of the set rules at home.  You can also ask questions and understand the iep information better.
6.    To make the program beneficial you can also pen down some strengths and needs of your child in various subjects. This can be easily done by making a list, with two different columns, strengths and needs. Your child’s memory, determination and patience in a particular subject, effort, reading, listening, working in group, doing homework are his strengths  and if the child misses out in any of these strength, that are essential, then you can make a note. IEP goals can work on the areas and improve the skills.

IEP also helps in developing some new skills in your child, but for all these you as a parent need to be supportive. You should also ensure that your child is not overbearing because of your worry for his or her success. You should remember that every child is special, only that some children need a little more care than the others.
