Britain to Barcelona: Tapas and More…

Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain and is a perfect holiday destination for British tourists. Budget flights are available from most British airports and some fares are ridiculously cheap. One can leave home in the morning and be in Barcelona by the afternoon for about the same price as a meal in a local British version of a tapas restaurant. So, why not have the real thing? Believe me, there are tapas and then there are tapas – and no one can make them better than the chefs in Barcelona.

On my first visit to Barcelona, the lovely Spanish girlfriend of one of my old muso buddies took me to visit a tapas bar in the neighbourhood. There was barely enough room for the 5 or 6 customers, including us, and there were no seats or tables. Diners stood at the bar in the establishment (which was about the size of a walk-in wardrobe) and ordered from an extensive chalkboard menu. We were served some of the most delicious small servings of food I had ever eaten, along with home-brewed cider that defied description. It was in that moment that I truly fell in love with Barcelona, and especially tapas.

There is an almost endless choice of different tapas in Barcelona, and every tapas restaurant specializes in their own creations. There are seafood tapas in astounding variety, meat tapas (especially ham – and the ham is from heaven, as far as I can tell), potato tapas, tapas served on bread, duck liver tapas, and on and on…

Tapas alone are reason enough to visit Barcelona, but there is much more to the city, of course. La Rambla, the famous avenue; Parc Güell & Sagrada Familia (designed by Modernist architect Antoni Gaudi); the beaches; the museums; the festivals and much more.

If you don’t live near an airport in Britain, you can always take advantage of airport accommodations such as the Gatwick North Terminal hotels or perhaps a Luton hotel, to avoid fighting the traffic and to make sure you arrive on time for your departing flight, well-rested and ready for fun (and tapas, of course) when you land in beautiful Barcelona.
