Are You Likely To Get Asthma If You Have Eczema?

Studies show that asthma and eczema are two health problems that are both
caused by the immune systems’ lack of ability to fight off allergens. This is primarily the reason why people who have eczema also have the tendency

Raphael Kopan, Ph.D., professor of developmental biology and of dermatology
at the Washington University School of Medicine, also found in his studies
that asthma could really begin with damaged or defective skin. Cells in the
damaged skin can secrete a compound called thymic stromal lymphopoietin
(TSLP) that is capable of eliciting a powerful immune response. The TLSP
secreted by the skin travels through the blood system and throughout the
body. Once it reaches the lungs, it triggers the hypersensitivity
characteristic of asthma. Kopan strongly believes that the link between
asthma and eczema, however, can be broken if the defective skin that
produces TSLP could be addressed properly.
Recent studies done by scientists at Dundee University in Scotland, UK who
are also studying the connection between asthma and eczema discovered that
people with asthma and/or eczema are carrying a mutated gene that is
responsible for blocking the production of a body protein called filaggrin.
The lack of filaggrin allows allergens to pass through the skin and cause a
physical allergic reaction (which may be in the form of eczema) or within
the lungs and air passage (asthma).
To date, researchers and scientists are still in the process of discovering
treatments and ways on how to break the link between asthma and eczema.
