Dryer Vent Cleaning Can Make Your Home Safer

Lint buildup in your dryer is one of the leading causes of fires in people homes and can easily be avoided by following a few simple dryer vent cleaning procedures.  For most people the only part of cleaning their dryer that they do on a regular basis is to clean out the lint filter or trap. Unfortunately this is not enough to prevent many other problems. A thorough cleaning of all the ducting and vent is needed and is something you can do yourself or hire a professional company like Daffy Ducts to come do for you.

Depending on how your house is built and where your dryer is located in conjunction with the vent to the outside the job of cleaning a dryer vent can be quick and easy or very difficult.   A proper cleaning includes much more than just the dryer vent and involves the uses of several specialty tools to do a good job.  Most people are not going to have these tools and to use anything less just will not get the job done.

The tools you will need to do a thorough job of cleaning a dryer vent and the rest of the dryer includes several different lengths and styles of brushes.  You will need a long thin brush for cleaning the area inside the dryer where the lint trap goes and then you are going to need a couple of different size round brushes to clean out the duct pipes that lead to the vent.  You will also need a shop vacuum cleaner to suck up all the extra lint.

Begin your dryer vent cleaning project by unplugging the dryer from the wall and disconnecting it from the ducting.  In some cases this is no more than a piece of flexible plastic hose that is held on with a cable tie.  Take the lint trap out of your dryer and using the long thin brush and your shop vac clean down inside the place where the trap sits.  Go around to the back of your dryer and use one of the round brushes to clean out the exhaust duct that is coming out of your dryer with the shop vac.

Look at the duct work if it is short and you can see all the way through it then you can tell how clogged it is.  Using one of the long round brushes and the shop vac, scrub the walls of the duct while sucking out the lint and dirt.  If your dryer vent is one of those that go under the house then you will need to take a look at it from both ends.  To clean this type of duct while cleaning the dryer vent you will need a very long brush and a long vacuum attachment.

Finally to complete your dryer vent cleaning project you need to clean the vent itself, after all this started out as a simple vent cleaning job.  Take a good stiff bush and clean all the accumulated buildup from the inside the vent.  Take time to make sure that the flap works smoothly to allow air to flow out when the dryer is running.  If this sounds like way too much work you can always call a professional like Daffy Ducts who has all the training and equipment to tackle even the worst dryer vent cleaning project.
