Diverse Hip Hop Sub-Styles

It’s not shocking that Rap music has so many different styles within its own style. While you probably know some of them, I can almost guarantee that you don’t know all of them. A lot of the sub styles don’t get radio play and may sound like a different genre of music altogether to some listeners. In this piece, I will give you a small glimpse into some of the many styles in the Hip Hop genre.

Of course, when people think of different types of Rap, they separate it by regions. The four that are notable are West Coast, East Coast, Dirty South, and the Midwest. The West Coast is responsible for such sub genres like Hyphy, Chicano Rap, G-Funk, and Jerkin’. Mafioso Rap and Underground Rap are mostly connected to the East Coast. The south mixed Gangsta Rap with Party Rap and created sub styles like Crunk, Snap Music, and Chopped and Screwed. The Midwest is basically the newest to the scene, but has always been around. The Midwest is most noted for styles like Ghetto House, Ghettotech, and Horrorcore. The details of each sub style are lengthy so I won’t go into too many specifics.

Alternative Hip Hop is almost big enough to be its own major music genre. It is basically Hip Hop music that doesn’t fit into the general forms of Rap, like Gangsta Rap, Party music, and anything else heard on the radio. This sub genre has risen to the top in the last couple of years. Some of the most notable Alternative artists right now are Mac Miller, Lupe Fiasco, OFWGKTA, and Asher Roth.

Most people have heard about Gangsta Rap at some point or another. As you may have guessed, it is one of the most popular, and most controversial, sub genres of Rap music. It has lost some of its appeal since its peak in the 90s. A lot of the best music was created when the feud between East and West was at its apex. Now, the most notable Gangsta Rap acts are The Game, 50 Cent, G-Unit, and Young Jeezy.

Nerdcore is a sub genre that many people may think is a joke before that actually realize that it is a legit music style. The name gives away what this genre is giving to the fans. Many of the Nerdcore albums and mixtapes that come out are free for everybody. A lot of the artists publish their music themselves as well. The music is witty and is about general nerd-like topics. Some notable artists include High-C, MC Frontalot (credited for coining the term), MC Lars, Optimus Rhyme, and ZeaLous1.

As you can see from this article, Hip Hop is a lot more than what the radio plays. What other genre in the world has so many different sub-styles? Rap is the most open minded genre in the world, in my honest opinion. Rock is the only other genre that can even be mentioned in the same sentence.
