Say Goodbye to Glasses With Lasik Eye Surgery

Imagine what it would be like to wake up in the morning and be able to see clearly without having to rely on your glasses or contact lenses. This is a very real possibility, and can be achieved with corrective laser eye surgery, using Lasik technology. Lasik surgery has made this dream come true for millions of people.

Lasik surgery procedures are available to treat farsightedness (hyperopia) as well as nearsightedness (myopia), and can also help correct astigmatism, a problem which occurs when the curvature of the eye is imperfect, in many cases, this will cause vision to be blurred.

The Lasik surgery procedure is a rather quick and painless process requiring only a few minutes of attention for each eye. Once the eye has been numbed by a local anesthetic, the surgeon will make an incision creating a corneal flap. The next step is to reshape the cornea, after the corneal reshaping process, the flap is then put back into place and sealed.

Shortly after surgery, most find that vision has already begun to improve. Images are becoming clearer, acuity is increasing, and blurriness is decreasing. While it may take several days to see the full results, patients will see a big change in their vision before they even leave the office. However, it may take several months for vision to completely stabilize, causing slight daily changes in vision from one day to the next.

Another aspect that makes laser eye surgery so appealing is that the patient will return home on the very same day, making recovery time remarkably short. When returning home after your procedure you will need to take it easy for the remainder of the day. Although an eye drop regimen and follow-up appointments are necessary for a healthy recovery, many patients are able to return to work and resume most of their normal, daily activities the very next day.

Of course, with Lasik eye surgery, as with any other medical procedure, there is a risk of side effects and complications. Dry eye, glare, halos, and induced astigmatism are the most common Lasik surgery side effects. However, many of the laser vision correction side effects are minor. Even the more serious complications that are associated with the corneal flap and epithelial ingrowth can be treated and corrected.

Not everyone is a candidate for the Lasik procedure, and only a Lasik surgery evaluation will determine if you are.  Alan Carlson, MD, is one of the most knowledgeable and well respected eye doctor and Lasik surgeons in the country.
