Enterprise Video Processing

What is video processing? In the world of computer science, and eletrical engineering, video processing is a particular case of signal processing. This often employs video filters and where output and input signals are video files or video streams. Techniques for video processing are used in many different devices, such as television sets, vcrs, dvds, video codecs, video scalers and video players. There are even online services that allow videos, or live videos, to be streamed directly to a video output device, like a computer monitor or mobile device.

Originally, when you wanted to stream video for public viewing, you were required to have a specially designed room that was outfitted with remotely controlled cameras. A person had to operate each of the cameras from a control room, such as zooming in and out on the speaker or activity that you wanted to display on screen. One of the unfortunate things about this style of set-up is the cost. Electrical engineering professor, Bernd Girod estimates that just one classroom at Standford University that has this form of setup would cost over $100,000.

At Stanford, the students took the initative and felt they could do the same thing for a mere $500, severely cutting costs while doing the same thing. The process was simplified and all the original equipment was reduced to just three things. A tripod, a high-definition camcorder, and a wireless microphone. Along with this simplification of the entire process, the program was able to be control the view automatically.

From lecture to streaming video, the only really human interaction that is required is to set up the camcorder and upload the video file to a remote server that can then be accessed online. Since the file is now up on the cloud, the only thing you need to see these videos is a computer and a web browser to watch the video.

From there on the cloud, when you log on to watch the video, the feed is all taken care of by the processing and encoding software found on the remote servers that are all located at appropriate cloud video processing service companies. Everything from the basic feed itself, to the scaling is dealt with when you load up your chosen video to watch from the comfort of your own home and device.
