Rangantittu Bird Santuary

In aug We decided to take a trip to Rangantittu Bird Sanctuary in Karanataka in south india, which is16 to 18 km short of mysore towards Banglore , or 2-3 km from Bangalore -Mysore highway off historic Srirangaputnam town. The town is famous for a very ancient temple dedicated to Sri Ranganathaswamy, a form of Lord Vishnu. Other attractions in town includes the Jumma Masjid (aMosque) and the Daria Daulat Gardens.

The sancturary consits of six Islets in the Cauvery river formed by the backwater of the Krishnarajasar dam.The islets formed a imp nestling ground for birds. The omithologist DR Salim Ali persuaded the king of Mysore to declare the area a wildlife sancturary in 1940

Bird nests are on small islands in the water body and best way to see the exotic birds and crocodiles at close quarters is to hire a boat exclusively for yourself (or your family) and tip the oarsman we did the same ,he will make sure you get to see the best .-Riverine reed beds cover the banks of the islands, while the islands themselves are covered in broadleaf forests, with dominant species being Terminalia arjun (Arjun tree), bamboo groves, and Pandanus trees. Eucalyptus and Acacia trees have also been planted, which might lead to long-term eradication of native species.

The islands are host to numerous small mammals, including Bonnet Macaque, colonies of Flying Fox and common small mammals like Common Palm Civet and Indian Gray Mongoose and the monitor lizard.

The Marsh Crocodile is a common inhabitant of the riverine reed beds. which is the breeding site for several water bird species, including the Painted Stork, Open-billed Stork, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Common Spoonbill, Woolly-necked Stork, Black-headed Ibis, hite Ibis, , and other common birds like egrets, cormorants, Oriental DPainted Stork, , The park is home to a large flock of Streak-throated Swallowarter,. River Tern, Great Stone Plover and Indian Shag

It is a bird watchers paradise.
