Keeping ahead in email marketing
Much, if not most, of the hype surrounding email marketing is well deserved. It is cheap, easy, effective and gives excellent, class-leading return on investment. The only cost is populating your email marketing list and once you have secured that you have a very productive asset.
One significant advantage of email marketing is speed of replies. The information is all but instant. This is an asset that should be exploited in the same way you use the information on subscribers. The only question that might confuse you is how.
Many email service providers give you access to free email templates. You might well have picked one you quite liked on the first scan and run with that. You can fiddle with the details a bit and put pictures where you want them. Once you have a design that suits you there is no need to fiddle with it any more.
The unfortunate thing is that you do not know if it suits the subscribers to your email lists. Or rather you will not know until you get your first returns. You might think that by then it is all too late but you would be wrong.
Whilst the generic term for what we do is bulk email marketing it does not follow that an email should be sent out to all those on your email lists at the same time. To do so is to miss the opportunities you get when the returns come in.
Free email templates mean that investment in a design is low. We will go through what considerations should concern you in a later article but in the meantime we will stick with how to get the most out of the templates.
One option is to send out half a dozen different styles of email at the same time and then see which one gives the best returns. You will then have an easy time at the next sending. That method can, however, be wasteful. Five of them will not give the best ROI.
It would be better to create an email list from your main one. The percentage will depend on the number of subscribers you have but do not be too generous. Just enough is ample. Section it into six and send your emails out to them. The returns will then show which design was the best.
The speed of return is an advantage here. Once you know which gives the best ROI you can use that one for the remainder.
I do not want to go too far into the maths but let us look at the figures. In the first case where we followed the bulk email route by using the whole of the email list, less than 19% of the recipients got the best email. In the second case, on the assumption that you used a lavish 25% as the experimental group, you get 79% made up of the ones not sent an email in the first sending plus 1/6th of the experimental group, 4% give or take.
Make the most of the free email templates.
