IWC Blue Big Pilot Watch
The Big Pilot collection is one of IWC’s most famous and best well-received watch lines. And it is recently enriched by a new model named IWC Blue Big Pilot Limited Edition. The new Big Pilot watch features special blue/black color scheme.
Like most modern Big Pilot watches, this watch houses an IWC Calibre 51111. To my knowledge, this 42-jewel automatic movement is one of the biggest automatic movements currently available on this planet. Developed from the Calibre 50000, this movement, with a huge mainspring, is able to store energy for nearly 200-hour using. But to keep high precision of the watch, IWC makes it stop automatically after 7-day accurate running.
To accommodate the large movement, the stainless steel case is made to 46.2mm x 15.8mm. With refined finishing on the surface, the fairly big case also houses an additional soft iron safety cage which is meant to enhance the anti-magnetic performance of the watch. The watch crown, in the brand’s signature diamond shape, is fixed at 3 o’clock position, always ready for your adjusting operation.
However, I have quite mixed feeling about the watch’s blue/black color scheme. On one hand, this color scheme differentiates this model from other Big Pilot watches; On the other hand, it weakens the gorgeous high-legibility and high contrast the family is famous for. Of course, I believe that the bright-blue SuperLuminova used on markers and markings will ensure optimal reading in places of conditions. So I am a bit glad that the color of the date wheel remains in white-on-black, which nicely echoes with the white arrow on the power reserve indicator that is placed at 3 o’clock. Position.
According to IWC, the Blue Big Pilot watch is limited to just 50 pieces, each of which bears “One out of Fifty” engraving on the case side. And it is exclusively sold a a few boutiques in Beverly Hills, California and Las Vegas.
