A Good Synopsis Of The Film Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky

On May 24, 2009, a movie debuted at the Cannes Film Festival about two world famous celebrities. They were the famed French designer Coco Chanel and Russian musician Igor Stravinsky. The movie was selected as the Closing Firm of the festival. It was simply titled Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky.

The French film is based on the fictional novel that Chris Greenhalgh wrote in 2002. While the book and the movie are fictional, both are based on true events. Greenhalgh wrote about Coco Chanel’s alleged affair with Stravinsky during the time they both lived in Paris in 1920.

2009 was also the year that Anne Fontaine directed and released her movie based on the life of Coco Chanel. The movie, Coco avant Chanel, starred Audrey Tautou. Unfortunately the movie strictly based on the life of the designer was not as popular as the one based on her dramatic love affair.

The storyline of the movie is an intriguing look into the affair. It begins in Paris, France. It is 1913 and Coco Chanel is in attendance at the premier of Igor Stravinsky’s outrageous ballet, The Rite of Spring. The musical scores and the racy choreography offended some audience members who preferred more classical and demure ballet.

The music and dance appalled the large audience, which sets off the biggest musical riot in history. But, young Coco was not offended in the least. In fact, she enjoyed the show and is especially interested in Igor when she sees him storming out of the angry theater.

It is seven years before Coco sees Igor again. She has become a successful designer and her business is thriving. But she has not been successful in love and is currently mourning her former lover, Arthur Capel. She meets Igor again when he has fled to Paris after escaping the Russian Revolution. There is an instant attraction between them.

Chanel offers Stravinsky and his family the use of her villa located on the outskirts of Paris. While he, his wife, and their children are living in the villa, Stravinsky and Chanel begin a closeted love affair. They have an intense passion for one another that shows in their work. Creatively, their work gets better. It is during their love affair that Igor’s music takes on a more freeing tone. It is also during the affair that the famous perfume, Chanel No. 5 is released. The love affair quickly comes to an end when Stravinsky’s wife is made aware of the affair.

Jan Kounen directed the movie and Chris Greenhalgh wrote the screenplay along with the book. The movie was filmed in three languages, French, English, and Russian. It stars Ann Mouglalis as Coco Chanel and Mads Mikkelson as Igor Stravinsky. Coco Chanel & Igor Stravinsky opened around the world after it’s premier at the Cannes Film Festival. The initial reviews were mixed. The film was said to be sophisticated but it lacked imagination. It also was not as developed as the book and left the viewer wanting more.
