Can Homeschool Mathematics Be given Over One Credit Each Year?

Homeschool parents typically look for mastery of subjects prior to moving ahead. This is shown whenever parents insist on “more than normal work” in complex subjects like math and science. Whereas public as well as private schools may not finish a math textbook during a school year, a number of home school parents will consider a year not successful unless the book is finished. This can lead to an increased number of hours invested on one subject. One mom said to me that her son did all of the 344 lessons in Pre-calculus and easily spent well over 10 hours each week on his math lessons. Her concern was if she should give her son more than one high school credit for his effort.

Sad to say, one entire high school course such as Pre-calculus is one complete credit. One textbook is also one credit – even if it takes forever. Even if you count more than 120 hours, it is still only one credit. When our boys participated in swim team, for example, it was countless hours but still only one credit a year for PE. Math is just one of those subjects like organized sports that could take a lot of hours to complete every year, yet should still just be one high school credit. It is a huge, beefy, manly credit because it is Pre-calculus, and you can be proud of that!

Now is a great time to bring up that you do not need to count hours AND count textbooks. You can measure credit value by counting hours OR by finishing a textbook, but do not determine both ways. If you use a textbook, determine credits that way, and do not take the time counting hours.

Regardless of what you settle on, don’t forget the parent always knows best. You may determine that your son deserves something more than simply one credit on his transcript. If you do, you might consider giving him honors credit to take into account all the additional work he did for his class. You are in charge of your child’s education. I am just here to offer my view based on my years of experience as well as gray hairs.
