Google’s New Patent and the Rise of Ring Back Advertising

Ra’anana – Google has just been granted a patent from the USPTO that replaces the ring back tone with audio advertisements. The patent was filed in 2008 and the idea behind it is to utilize the ring-back sound that plays while a person waits for a phone call to be answered. It is not yet clear when and how exactly Google would make use of the patent.  It’s possible that ring-back advertising will be implemented as part of Google Voice, which is a free VoIP calling and voice message management system.

Ring back ads debuted 2008 and became popular internationally, although they are still considered a new concept in the U.S.  Turkcell, Turkey’s biggest mobile operator, had launched a ring back advertising service named TonlaKazan in 2008.  Ring-back ad campaigns have included over 50 different brands, among them Coca-Cola, Unilever and Kraft.

SellAring, the audio mobile ad platform, launched a new and advanced ring back advertising service this January. SellAring is an Android based network that replaces the ring back tone with audio ads up to ten-seconds long.  The sellAring SDK is integrated into Android apps and acts as a monetization source for app developers.  Android phone users listen to ads in exchange for downloading apps for free.

Unlike Google’s patent which is network based, sellAring’s ring back ad technology is device based.   This means audio advertisements can be delivered to any country and area worldwide and no operator consent is required.

A bright future is predicted for ring back advertising, as reported by a Juniper research from January 2011.  The report highlights the increasing popularity of ring-back tone advertising and forecasts an annual ad spend of more than $780 million by 2015.

About sellAring:

SellAring is an audio-based mobile ad network for advertisers and app developers. The network delivers 10-second audio ads during the Ring Back Tone — the “dead time” while the mobile provider connects a phone call. For app developers relying on ad revenues, the sellAring SDK, when embedded in their free app, provides a powerful monetization vehicle. Simply by hearing an occasional audio ad before a call, the user enjoys the app for free — without the interference of banner ads. For advertisers, sellAring provides untapped real estate, delivering targeted ads with enhanced user engagement and a powerful a Call-to-Action menu.
