SEO – A Marketing Strategy for Some, But Not for Everyone
Search Engine optimization, howsoever attractive a concept has its limits. While you may see numerous articles citing various strategies to be employed for better traffic through dominant page ranking, not every tip is going to apply to your case. Moreover, the frenzy and popularity of the concept itself has created several organic myths and innuendos that paint an SEO picture that wanders far from reality. Hence, before employing SEO onto your business, get the clear picture as this marketing strategy is not for anybody and everybody.
Say, for example, you own a small coffee shop situated at the corner of a street. Now, the basic purpose of your shop is to sell coffee and other food items along with it. So, if you somehow manage to attract more people to your shop, there is no guarantee that you could offer all of them a place to sit down and have their coffee. And, if you cannot do that, then many may not want to frequent you shop. As an inference, what really spoiled your business was not your ambition but your offering. SEO is quite similar to this situation. In the haste of following a goal, you must not forget other important requirements. So, while you may be busy increasing the traffic to your website, you might end up losing those visitors if your site lacks extensive, appropriate and up to date content. So, it is advisable to start your SEO endeavor with at least two or three goals.
Today, SEO works hand with social media optimization (SMO) to such a point that both become one big marketing component for producing highly valued back links. As a result, if you though that you could just create some great content for your web pages and sit back, then you are grossly mistaken. You have to market your site among other users in various social sites. You have to reach out to people in public forums and discussion pages and inform them about your website. On top of it all, you have to do it all without being so explicit about your real desire. For example, if you decide to use social bookmarking sites for back link creations then you cannot start tagging your web pages from the beginning. This will only result in you getting booted out of the site!
More often than not, people get attracted to short cuts and SEO is no stranger to this phenomenon. Here too, there are black hat marketing techniques that only look to spike up page ranking through devious means. Whether by using a white font on a white background or by repeating keywords at the end of the page in small and indistinguishable fonts, such actions will only bring you more bad news. The fact is that search engines help people looking for information on a particular subject with the best results first. Hence, it is the content that people are looking for and if you cannot provide it then neither the user, nor the search engine requires your services. It is as simple as that!
