Nappy rash basics

There should be some common saying that warns that nappy rash happens to every baby. There probably is no parent out there who has not dealt with a nappy rash at one time or another. This is not a surprise because the delicate skin of your baby is kept in a pretty unpleasant environment almost all the time. It is very humid, damp and dark.

The nappy rashes come in two main variations:

1. Yeast

This type of rash is the more severe one. In fact, the culprit is yeast that is known as candida. It is the same one that is responsible for thrush.

2. Irritation

This is the more common type of nappy rash and is caused by the skin getting irritated because of the stool and the pee that get collected in the diaper over time when it is not changed on a regular basis.

You can treat and prevent most of the nappy rashes quite easily. For example, there are nappy rash creams (or Creme til tør og rød hud as we Danes say) that can be applied on the skin of your baby. They can be used as a preventative measure or for treatment after a nappy rash has occurred on the skin of the child as a result of exposure to dampness and feces. Some creams for nappy rash have zinc oxide in them and are the best choice you can find in the shops. When you first notice that the skin is irritated you can start treating it with the nappy rash cream you have chosen every time you change your baby’s diaper. You can continue doing this until the nappy rash (baby rød numse udslæt is the term used in Denmark) completely disappears. Moreover, you can continue applying the cream each time the diaper is changed in order to make sure that no further irritation will appear. This way you can get rid of the annoying nappy rashes for a long time. Of course, they are bound to manifest themselves again at a certain point in time but a simple nappy rash cream always does the job and gets rid of the nappy rash in no time. A nappy rash is not something a parent should worry too much about as it happens to most babies before they become one year old.

In case your baby has yeast infection you will not be able to handle it by simply applying nappy rash cream since such creams do not work on yeast infections. You might notice some extra irritation and small patches of redness or areas which appear raw on the skin of your child.  In case this occurs you should visit your doctor in order to get prescription for antifungal topical treatment.
