Diet during Typhoid and Menopause

Typhoid is a bacterial disease caused by ingestion of food or water infected by salmonella enterica. Typhoid is also known as typhoid fever. Few symptoms of typhoid are:

•    Fever as high as 103° to 104° F (39° to 40° C)
•    Weakness
•    Stomach pains
•    Headache
•    Loss of appetite
•    Decreased heart rate
•    Constipation
•    Bloody nose
•    Rash of flat, rose-colored spots

During typhoid fever a proper diet plan is necessary to provide sufficient proteins, it maintain the sufficient nutrition and for electrolyte equilibrium and maintenance of water. Typhoid fever is caused by intestinal infection and hence the sufferer should follow a diet which has easy to digest and light food items.

The diet during typhoid should be of high calorie intake with plenty of carbohydrate as fruit juices with glucose, coconut water, barley water, porridge, rice kanji, rava and such food items. Carbohydrates are primary source of energy and are necessary for proper metabolism of fats. Foods rich in fiber should be eaten as roughage present in these foods facilitate in easy and proper bowel movement. Fiber present in fruits should be given as it won’t further irritate the digestive system.

Patient should be given proper protein diet as well to facilitate formation of damaged cells. Typhoid may also cause dehydration so ample amount water in form of milk, juices, coconut water should be given. Milk serves as an ideal food for typhoid fever.

Food should be bland and not oily or spicy as it will irritate stomach more. If the person don’t like eating and is avoiding food, then try to feed small quantities. It is necessary for the patient to eat. Also the following measures should also be kept in mind:

•    Drink boiled and properly filtered water.
•    Wash your feet and hands thoroughly, especially after outdoors.
•    Keep food in closed containers.
•    Have steamed/boiled food only.
•    Do not eat outside food
•    Take 1 spoon honey in a glass of hot water and add 1/2 a lime to it, every morning
•    Avoid- tea, spicy food, coffee, alcohol and soft drinks.
•    Increase fluid intake – glucose water, soups, fresh juices, coconut water.
•    In certain cases of a chronic carrier, it becomes necessary to surgically remove the gall bladder.

Menopause is the stage when menstrual flow stops in women and a woman is not able to conceive or form egg in ovary. During menopause the following symptoms can be seen:

•    Changes in periods (they may be shorter or longer, heavier or lighter, or have more or less time in between)
•    Hot flashes.
•    Night sweats.
•    Trouble sleeping through the night.
•    Vaginal dryness.
•    Mood changes.
•    Hair loss or thinning on the head, growth in facial hair.

During this period deficiency in calcium is often seen so there should be an increase in calcium. There should be an increase in iron as well because menopause can cause the person to be anemic. Have soya bean products, Soy may give relief from hot flashes, although that benefit is still being debated by researchers. However, we do know that soy may help protect our heart and arteries by lowering bad cholesterol.

Eat fruits and vegetables more during menopause. All the fruits and vegetables have abundant source of phytoestrogens, which are particular plant chemicals that are very similar in structure to estrogen, and may act as weak estrogen in our bodies. Include products which are rich in calcium, iron, vitamin B complex etc. for supplying body of the essential nutrients.
