Fire Protection Systems With Particular Reference To Turbine Fire

The basic approach to modern Fire Protection System is based on authority having jurisdiction standards or international standards such as NFPA or FM. To mitigate the normal land based mega structural fire, water is stored in under ground fire reserve tank of the stipulated capacity and is drawn using electrically driven pumps or sprinklers. All pumps must have separate suction line and the fire suction header. Delivery from the pump is connected to the respective hydrants and sprinkler system. The sprinkler pump is isolated from the main discharge header by a no return valve so that the hydrant pump can also act as stand by for sprinklers.

The pumps are designed to maintain a pressure of 3.5 kg/sq. cm at the farthest hydrant. A standby diesel engine driven fire pump of the same capacity is installed as back up for the electrically operated fire hydrant or sprinklers.

Gas detectors monitor concentration of hydrocarbon gases in certain environments. Optical gas detectors are configured to report alarms when the gas concentration in the environment reaches each of three independently programmable levels, expressed as a percentage of the lower explosive limit in the air. As determined by the application requirements, the manufacturer of the device calibrate with one of eight hydrocarbon gases like methane or propane. Conversion factors are used to correct for gases other than the factory calibration gas. The optical censors are not dependent on the presence of oxygen in a mixture of gases and therefore can function effectively in environment where other censor technologies cannot.

Open path combustible gas detector is a gas detection system that provides continuous monitoring of combustible hydrocarbon gas concentration at a distance of 5 to 200 meters. This system delivers superior open path combustible gas detection for protection for oil or gas industrial facilities. The gas detection process is specially useful for perimeter monitoring and applications where combustible gas or vapor leaks may happen over a widely dispersed area.

For effective fire Protection Systems fire alarm plays an important role for prevention of fire. An automatic fire alarm is designed to detect the unwanted presence of fire by monitoring environmental changes associated with combustion. In general a fire alarm system is classified as either automatic actuated or manually actuated or both. Automatic fire alarm system is intended to notify the building occupants to evacuate in the event of a fire or other emergency, report the event to a off-premises location in order to summon emergency services and to prepare the structure and associate systems to control the spread of fire and smoke.

turbine fire system has now a day assumed greater importance because of large scale installation of various types of turbines and their high susceptibility to fire accidents.

With government across the globe becoming ever more aware of the environmental benefits of wind generated power, the number of wind farms and the financial investments in constructing, erecting and maintaining wind turbines is increasing exponentially. Effective Turbine fire system, fire detection and suppression has become a top priority for turbine manufacturer and wind farm operators globally. The majority of the turbine fires are due to lightning strike brought by their exposed and high altitude locations and height of the structures. Mechanical failure or electrical malfunctioning also account for most of the fires that can be fuelled by upto 200 gallons of hydraulic fluid and lubricants therein.
