Powerful iPad Battery Can Endure LTE for 24 Hours
The algorithm driving the new iPad battery display was revealed to be plain wrong,falsely reporting that the iPad is fully charged up to two hours before it really is.That much was known last week as reports of this spread,resulting in close scrutiny of the iPad’s battery performance.The last year was supposedly all about the next major iteration of Apple’s iPhone series.Unfortunately,all eager users got was a new operating system integrated into what was largely the same phone…except for Siri.The only other notable changes were an 8 megapixel camera (with 1080p HD video),an A5 dual-core processor and an improved antenna.

Here is one of the most impressive stats about the new iPad.It can apparently carry a persistent 4G LTE network connection for a full uninterrupted 24 hours.The external batteries get overlooked sometimes,but it is one of the biggest changes to the new version of Apple’s successful tablet product line.The new iPad,which is officially just being referred to as the “iPad” even though many still call it the iPad 3,boasts an amazing new display along with 4G LTE connectivity.
Judging by Apple’s previous practices,the company does not change chipsets among non-linked products.For example,the same baseband chipsets are shared between the iPhone 3GS and the iPad,as well as the iPhone 4 and the iPad 2.Now,even if Apple introduces Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology in the iPad 3,there will be need for another Printed Circuit Board (PCB).The current leading supplier of LTE baseband silicon is Qualcomm and there is currently no baseband hardware to support both LTE and voice (over 1x/WCDMA) without extra silicon.
The greater power capacity of the new iPad highlights another issue that hasn’t gotten much attention-how portable battery charger that can be used to charge smartphones and tablets are now rendered even less useful when used with the new iPad.Meanwhile,Eric Zemen from InformationWeek offered a number of tips to maximize the battery life of the new iPad.The trick,writes Zemen is to reduce the brightness of the display to 50 percent or less,preferably between 20-30 percent.Notifications should also be shut off,while the iPad’s 3G/4G radio should be disabled when Wi-Fi is accessible.Finally,location services should also be disabled,which will ensure that the GPS radio will not be inadvertently activated.
And the increased battery size makes recharging less of a hassle than it was before.That has led to some overheating issues,but Apple assures that the device is still well within its “thermal specifications.”Aside from those differences,though,there isn’t a whole lot of change from the iPad 2.Many are disappointed that this is merely an incremental upgrade,in much the same way that the iPhone 3GS was just a minor update to the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 4S didn’t really differ much from the iPhone 4.So,the new iPad will sell like gangbusters just because it’s from Apple and it can be described as being “new.”But expect the next iteration of the tablet to be the one that is actually new and interesting.
It is for that reason that Apple likely doesn’t even want to call the new device the iPad 3.The company is under pressure to release product updates every year,when in reality it takes multiple years to actually advance the technology significantly.Not all is doom and gloom though.The Verge has run some tests of its own and confirmed an earlier report that the new iPad can operate as a Verizon (NYSE: VZ) LTE hotspot for over 24 hours.Of course,the caveat is that the Retina display must remain off in order to achieve this feat of endurance.This can be attributed to the powerful battery in the new iPad,which has 70 percent higher capacity than the one in the iPad 2.Of course,it would be difficult to imagine someone paying upwards of $629 for a portable battery chargers wireless router.
