Will Renault Duster prove to be a game changer for Renault in India

Renault India is all set to launch their first low priced car in India, Renault Duster on July 4th, 2012. All that Renault has been talking about the SUV in on brink of materializing; all the expectations will be on stake once it goes on sale on Wednesday. The SUV is present in global markets and is one of the most popular models from Renault manufactured under its low cost brand Dacia. The SUV is finally coming to India and the car maker has made just the right amount of changes to the SUV for the Indian car market, the specifications have been moulded suiting the requirements of Indian customers. With so many changes which the car maker has introduced in the SUV according to the domestic market, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the pricing also is going to be aggressive.

Let us throw some light on the diesel version of the SUV, as looking at the demand for diesel cars in India, it wouldn’t be wrong to say that the diesel version is going to be more popular than the petrol version. The diesel version equipped with the 1.5 litre dCI diesel engine that pumps out 110 PS of power is more refined that the Dacia Duster version.

The diesel version will also be offered in another version which will have the same engine but will produce a tad less power than this version. The diesel version is expected to get more bookings than the petrol version, Renault Dusetr price for the diesel version is also expected to start at Rs 8 lakhs, while the Renault Duster price for the petrol version is likely to be tagged at Rs 7 lakhs. Renault Duster launched in UK is available at a price tag of Rs 8 lakh in Indian currency; the cars are usually priced less than the UK market, therefore car aficionados are speculating that the Duster price in India could be placed at Rs 7 lakhs.

Failed to impress the Indian customers so far, Renault India is positive that with the launch of its first volume product, the company will be able to tighten its grip in the domestic market. It had been a bumpy ride for the French car maker when it first made its entry in the Indian car market in alliance with Mahindra & Mahindra. Their first product Logan was a disaster, however after the divorce of Mahindra & Mahindra with Renault, Mahindra launched Logan with a new name, Verito. The sedan is now doing good in India, Mahindra is also developing a under four meter version of Verito which could be launched by the end of 2012. However, the French car maker did not lose hope made a new strategy to re-enter the domestic market. In 2011, Renault launched its first sedan under its badge, Fluence.

Despite being endowed with a beautiful design, the premium sedan could not do wonders in the domestic market. After Fluence, Renault came up with Renault Koleos crossover which again was a part of the D segment. Koleos too failed to lure the Indian customers, in January 2012, Renault launched its first hatchback Pusle but this too was a part of the premium segment. However, Renault made sure that it rendered diesel variants of all its models in India. Renault has also added a diesel version to Duster, this first volume puller model from Renault is all set to spill magic in the domestic market, however details regarding price and other tid bits will be revealed about the SUV on the day of launch. More than the details response for the SUV from the customers will judge its fate in India for which we will have to wait for some time.
