Invention of the Record players

While it was the most popular device to listen to your favorite music collections at the Enlightment age, the record player still remains a prized possession of many artifact collectors, musicians and common people. Perhaps one of the chief causes behind the vast popularity of record players among people is because it was the only instrument at its time which could provide a very rich sound of tunes. But hardy few know the story behind the discovery of the record players. Replaced by modern digital playback instruments, the record player is still making a remarkable comeback among many.

The phonograph was invented by the Thomas Edison in 1877, who is also famous for inventing the light bulb. It was without a doubt, one of his favorite inventions. The idea of recording sound was first discovered and invented by him. He knew that sound travelled in waves. His idea was to somehow record the waves so that they could be played again later generating the same sound or voice. The same principle is used in modern recording devices too. He created a device having a brass cylinder which was wrapped in tinfoil, which could rotate and move lengthwise when it would be turned by a handcrank. On a side was the diaphragm. When the sound was forced through the receiving end, the membrane eventually vibrated and caused the needle to create a groove sort of thing to be imprinted on the foil as it was being turned by the handcrank. This caused it to record the sound. However, the amplifier needle’s work was to playback the recorded song. When the cylinder was set to beginning and the amplifier needle was placed in the grooves, the original sound was produced and amplified. This was an eureka moment for Edison. Among the scientist community, it is still remembered that he had first recorded the rhyme “Mary had a little lamb” onto it.

It was the only device in its time which could record and playback sounds. But being difficult to operate, it wasn’t a hit among most of the families. 10 years after, another inventor made few modifications to the phonograph and had created the record player. Emile Berliner had the idea of creating flat shaped disc- gramophone records in which sounds had been recorded on both sides of the disc. He created the Victor Talking Machine Company which created a new version of gramophone, where the horns were tilted down so that the entire device could be placed at homes. This was the record players which we know. The people could enjoy their favorite music in their homes itself.
