Standing > Sitting: Why you should use a Stand Up Desk

Sitting is unhealthy because it leads to lethargy, but it can also be lethal. The American Cancer Society found that women who exercised but spent more than six hours per day on their butt increased their risk of dying by 37% compared to their counterparts who let their bottoms have some fresh air. Exercising men who spent more than 6 hrs seated increased their death risk by 17%. Risk increased in both groups for non-exercising people. Sitting can shorten your lifespan and decrease your overall health because it suppresses hormones that affect triglycerides and cholesterol. Sitting also leads to lethargy, poor circulation, deflated caloric burning, and lower metabolism. All of the health ailments caused by sitting can lead to heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and fatigue.

The problem with modern society is that many people have a 9-to-5 desk job that has traditionally required them to sit for 8-12 hours each day. One easy trick to live a healthier life with a “desk job” is to utilize an affordable standing desk to stand up and work at least part of the workday. A stand up desk lets users complete their normal seated desk job from the standing position; hence your body reaps the health benefits from sitting less and you can still be productive (possibly even more productive) at the office!

Switching to a stand up desk can be a little overwhelming and possibly scary at first. Many skeptics believe that standing during the workday will be too fatiguing. It’s true that standing will burn more calories and hence require more energy than sitting; but standing can also elevate energy levels by promoting blood flow and oxygen distribution throughout the body. Many standers report enhanced level of focus, creativity, and energy when standing (instead of sitting). One of the main body parts that can become fatigues when standing is the legs because they must support the entire bodyweight throughout the day. Use of a cushioned floor mat can ease leg stress and wearing compression stockings can facilitate blood flow in the stubborn lower limbs.

Standing while working is not a new idea (Mark Twain was a famous “stander”) and now there are multitudes of different types of standing desks on the market. One of the scariest aspects of these devices is there price. While many standing desks cost well over $1,000 it is possible to pick up an affordable standing desk for around $100. This is a great way for new standers to give standing at work a try. Some adjustable standing desks even let users choose if they’d like to sit or stand during the day. The flexibility to have a seat if you’re fatigued or losing focus because of your new posture is invaluable – especially to standing newcomers.

Standing has been scientifically shown to be a healthier posture than sitting. Using a stand up desk while working or computing is a great way for everyone to increase the amount of time spent standing. Best of all, switching from a constant seated position to a standing position can be done quickly, easily, and affordably. Because an affordable standing desk costs only around $100, there is no reason why everyone shouldn’t at least give standing a try – after all it’s your health!
