Types of Standing Desks

The posture and health benefits associated with standing have made standing desks one of the hottest topics in office ergonomics. Standing instead of sitting at the office has been shown to prolong life, decrease your risk of disease, and generally increase your overall health. The health benefits from standing stem from increased motion and circulation – both of which lead to burned calories, healthier hormone production and distribution, and enhanced blood flow throughout the body.

Almost anything that can reduce the amount of time spent sitting can improve your overall health. The typical office workday requires most people to be on a computer at least eight hours per day. Traditionally the workday was a sedentary and seated time. Standing Desks have freed people from being locked in the seated position for most of their day. A recent increase in popularity, thanks to the recognition that standing is “healthier” than sitting, means that there are numerous styles of Standing Desks on the market. Some of the more expensive sit stand desks put an entire work surface on a hydraulic lift that elevates to your desired height with the push of a button. Simple to use, these stand up desks allow people to quickly shift from sitting to standing at their will. Slightly less expensive models use a mechanical (rather than hydraulic) lift. Functionality is not consistent across all makes and models of standing desks. In an attempt to promote more movement in the user, treadmill desks take standing to another level by encouraging the user to walk at a slow, steady pace while working at a “desk.”

Less advanced, but perhaps easier to use and certainly more affordable, standing desks convert your existing seated desk into a sit/stand desk. The conversion allows you to stand up and work without investing in expensive and cumbersome hardware. The options to convert an existing desk into a standing desk range from a simple box to an adjustable height and angle stand. Conversions work great for laptop and desktop use, but since they do not typically elevate your entire workspace, people who rely on a large paper trail may find them less effective than a standing desk that elevates an entire workspace platform.

When choosing a standing desk, it is important to understand your intended use for the desk. Will you be standing while using a laptop, desktop, or do you need an entire elevated workspace? Laptop stand up desks are the simplest because laptops are light and are naturally designed for portability. When standing and working on a laptop, you’re posture will thank you if you have a separate keyboard and mouse. This way, your laptop screen can be elevated to eye-level, which allows you to stand up straight. A separate keyboard ensures that you’re typing in the most ergonomic way possible.

The marketplace is full of solutions that allow you to stand up during the workday. It’s wise to understand your intended use before purchasing your first standing desk.
