How au pairs can engage children?

Au pairs from Au Pare Care have an important activity to do: Engage children. Now, in the very early months you don’t really need to think about “activities” for baby per see, just the odd walk round the neighbourhood with the stroller, or a much needed cuppajoe to bemoan sleepless nights and breastfeeding woes with a mommy friend. But, as your baby gets to 6 months and beyond, and as they become increasingly active, you will need to get junior out the house for both yours and baby’s sanity. Of course, they are still not old enough to appreciate or handle day trips to the Zoo, Disneyland and the like, so, the big question is, what CAN you do with baby when the whole day yawns ahead of you…? Here are some of my recent brainstorming ideas I came up with for my daughter Maisie:

1. Walking around the neighbourhood: Babies just love to be outside, they enjoy looking at the trees and taking in the sights and sounds. It’s good for you too. (And the dog if you have one!).

2. Play dates with baby friends: Alternate visits to each other’s houses as baby increasingly becomes interested in other children and wants to play.

3. Trips to the beach: If you have one close by, babies love to play with (and of course eat!) Sand and splash in the water.

4. Parks and picnics: Check out what your local area has to offer in the way of parks, weather permitting.

5. Library events: Most libraries have free story times and sing along groups for different ages.

6. Petting zoos: They might not be quite ready for San Diego Zoo just yet but a local farm with petting zoo might amuse.

7. Summer concerts: Many towns have concerts in the park during the summer months which are always a good excuse to get the family together for a picnic and some music in the park, often for free!

8. Mommy and Me sing-along & dance classes. These can be pricey, but most will usually allow you to take a free trial class first to see if you and baby like it.

9. Mommy and Me Yoga: Look out for these at studios, gyms, and YMCA’s.

10. Swimming and swim groups for babies: Again at your local public pool or Y.

11. My Gym type places with ball pools and age appropriate climbing structures. (And yes I will suck it up and go to these places for the good of my child).

Whatever ideas you come up with, have fun with your little one and au pair from Au Pare Care. On that note, I am off to an animal show at my local library this morning!
