Sravastic is an important place with religious importance of Buddhism and it is located in the Gonda District of Uttar Pradesh. It was considered as one of the six largest cities which were existed in the time of Gautama Buddha. The city is situated in the fertile Gangetic plains. It is located near Balarampur and 120km far from Lucknow, the capital city of Utter Pradesh. The city is located at the banks of the river Aciravati which is now known as Tapti river. Once it was the capital of Kosala kingdom. According to the Hindu mythology, the place was named after the King Shravasta of Suryavanshi Dynasty who ruled this place during 6th century. Here, the most important well visited buildings are Angulimala’s stupa, Anathapindika’s stupa, and an old temple dedicated to a Jain Tirthankara. Jetavana monastery is the main pilgrim place. Gandhakuti (Buddha’s hut) and the Anandabodhi tree are famous as the meditation and chanting are mainly done here. The old walls of the city are still here and these symbolizes the caliber of the architects of that periods. The Jain temple, Ananthapindika Stupa and the Agulimala Stupa are some prominent attractions of this place. Many Buddhist monks are seen meditating under the Ananthabodhi tree. Maheth, Sobhanath Temple and Saheth are well visited places here. Several monasteries from different countries like Thailand, South Korea, China and Tibet have been constructed here. The tourists congregate this place from all part of the world. Buddha Purnima the day of the birth of Lord Buddha is the main festival of this place. The Buddhist temples at Shravasti celebrate this festival grandly. The another festival of this place is Jain Mela. Jain devotees generally visit this place in the month of Kartik (October-November). The state shares an international boundary with Nepal and it is encompassed by Uttarakhand, Haryana and Delhi to the north and northwest, Rajasthan on the west, Madhya Pradesh on the south, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand on the south east and Bihar on the east. The international airport of Lucknow is the nearest airbase which is 150km far from this region. Gonda rail station is the closest rail head which connects with Ahmedabad, Bangalore, New Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata, Agra and other major places. By bus services this place is well linked with Allahabad, Agra, Kanpur, Lucknow, Mathura and other major places of UP. October – February is the best time to visit this place. Its economy depends on agriculture. Once it was the hub of Sanskrit-based education and holds a vast collection of ancient-to-medieval learning in Persian and Arabic.
