Many references to Nainital can be found in the ancient Mythology and folklores. According to local fables, Nainital was formed when three great Hindu sages, Atri, Pulastya and Pulaha dug a deep hole as there was not water in the place. It is said that the water of Nainital was drawn from the holy Lake of Mansarovar in Tibet. As such, a dip in the Lake here is considered equal to a dip in the Mansasarovar. Nainital is also called Tri-rishi-sarovar or Lake of Three Sages owing to the belief that it was built by the three sages.

Another story says that Nainital is one of the 64 places where the body parts of Goddess Parvati fell while Lord Shiva carried her charred body. The wide held belief is that it was the left eye of the Goddess that fell here, and Nainital became the sanctified home of the Goddess Naina Devi. Moreover, the fact that the lake is in an emerald eye shape also gives more credence to this story. The Shkathisthal, a temple of Naina Devi, is placed along the northern end of the lake.
