How to Put Together a Home Medical Supply Kit for Your Family

Every home should be equipped with a comprehensive first aid kit. It is impossible to predict when an emergency will arise, and having a home medical supply kit on hand will allow you to rest easy knowing that you are always prepared.

Your first step should be to select a portable bag or box that is lightweight, durable, can hold all of your emergency medical supplies, and is easy to carry with you at a moment’s notice if necessary. If possible, find a waterproof bag or box. In addition, it is important to place your supplies in sealed plastic bags. This will protect your supplies should they come in contact with water or other liquids.

According to the Red Cross, the following home medical supplies should be included in a first aid kit for a family of four:

a) First aid manual

b) Scissors

c) 1 cloth adhesive tape (1 inch x 10 yards)

d) 2 compress dressings (absorbent)

e) 25 adhesive bandages of various sizes

f) 5 packets antiseptic wipes

g) 10 sterile gauze pads (5 pads 3×3 inches, 5 pads 4×4 inches)

h) 1 instant cold compress

i) 2 aspirin packets

j) 5 packets antibiotic ointment

k) Tweezers

l) 1 space blanket

m) 2 pairs non-latex gloves

n) 2 roller bandage (one 3-inches wide and one 4-inches wide)

o) 2 triangular bandages

p) 1 one-way valve breathing barrier
q) Oral thermometer (not made from glass)

r) 2 packets hydrocortisone ointment

Additional components to include in your kit may include a mouthpiece for administering CPR, a list of emergency phone numbers, tweezers, safety pins, and a flashlight with batteries. You should also include items for any family members with personal medical issues. For example, if someone in your family suffers from severe allergies, keep a supply of allergy shots in your home medical supply kit.

The items that you include in your kit may also depend on the region in which you live. For example, if poisonous snake bites are common in your area, antivenin may be an important component of your home emergency kit.

Be prepared for emergencies by thoroughly reading your first aid manual before an actual emergency situation occurs. If someone in your family suffers from a specific medical condition, learn about the emergency treatments that you may need to administer before professional medical help is available. Being prepared ahead of time will offer you peace of mind.
