Number of NuvaRing Lawsuits Increase as Consumers Experience More Complications

The prescription contraceptive device NuvaRing has gained a lot of popularity because of lawsuits that have been filed against its maker, Merck and Co. (formerly Schering Plough Corp. and Organon Pharmaceuticals USA, Inc.). The NuvaRing is a small elastic ring that is inserted into the vagina and is kept in its place for three weeks.

Plaintiffs who have filed a NuvaRing lawsuit alleged that the product has caused a number of injuries and has serious side effects. One of the fifty lawsuits filed against Merck and Co. was the first known wrongful death lawsuit. The lawsuit says a woman has died after she has been using NuvaRing for five months. The autopsy showed that a blood clot in one of her lungs caused her death.

The lawsuits allege that the manufacturer and its affiliates knew of the contraceptive device’s side effects during the trial process conducted by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Aside from blood clotting, other side effects that are caused by NuvaRing bloating, vaginal bleeding (not menstrual cycle), breast tenderness, dizziness and nausea, headaches, and weight loss/gain. More severe reactions are allergies, breast lumps and discharges, swelling/numbness of limbs, dark urine, sudden vomiting, coughing up blood, and loss of menstrual period.

The FDA gave NuvaRing the go signal in 2001, but consumers have reported health complications and side effects. By 2007, the complaints have increased and several studies on the product were launched when a 32-year old woman died from deep vein thrombosis complications. She had been using NuvaRing since May 2007 and as a result of deep vein thrombosis, suffered fatal pulmonary thromboemboli.

Progestin and estrogen are two types of hormones commonly used in birth control pills. These are also hormones produced by NuvaRing, which is the basis on why it boasts a success rate of 99 percent. These hormones work together to prevent the ovaries from producing mature eggs. The hormones are released after the ring is inserted into the vagina. Progestin and estrogen are absorbed and distributed into the bloodstream.

Many women who are facing health problems are filing NuvaRing lawsuits against Merck. Some have said that NuvaRing’s advertising campaigns led other women to believe that it is as safe as using birth control pills. The truth is, hormones released by the ring are absorbed into the veins so users get a much higher dose than what is in the pill.
