What is an Employment Pass?
An Employment Pass (EP) is a type of work visa granted specifically to foreigners who hold professional, managerial (managing director, general manager, CEO), executive or specialist positions in a Singapore company. An EP may be applied after a foreigner has incorporated a Singapore company so that he may be able to live and work in Singapore. There is no limit as to the number of EPs that may be issued as the EP scheme is not under a quota system.
Who are eligible to apply for EP?
The following are eligible to apply for EP:
- Foreign Entrepreneurs, professionals, managing directors, and shareholders of Singapore companies who wish to relocate to Singapore to manage their company operations
- Owners/incorporators of a locally incorporated Singapore Company who needs to hire foreign employees
- Foreigners who have employment offers from prospective Singapore employers. In this case, the company will be the one to apply for the employment pass on your behalf.
What are the requirements for EP eligibility?
A fixed monthly salary of at least S$2,500 is required coupled with the one or more of the following requirements:
- A recognized Diploma/Degree qualification from a reputable university
- Professional qualifications
- Specialist skills
- Work related experience
Each applicant is evaluated by the Ministry of Manpower based on his/her own merits and also considers the following factors:
- Salary of applicant
- Age of applicant
- Roles & responsibility
- Repute of the company
- Company paid up capital
- Applicant current citizenship
It must be borne in mind that possessing a recognised educational qualification does not guarantee a successful EP application because other criteria also needs to be satisfied such as relevant work experience and/or professional skills. In the same vein, an applicant who does not possess a recognized educational qualification may not necessarily be rejected for EP if he possesses other compensating factors.
What are the types of EP?
EP has three main categories: P1, P2 and Q1 Pass. The P Pass is for foreigners who seek managerial, executive or specialist jobs.
- P1 Pass – for applicants earning a fixed monthly salary of more than S$7,000.
- P2 Pass – for applicants earning a fixed monthly salary of more than S$3,500 and up to S$7,000, and he/she possesses recognised qualifications.
- Q1 Pass – for applicants earning a fixed monthly salary of more than S$2,500 and he/she possesses recognised qualifications.
Both P and Q1 Pass holders can apply for Dependant’s Pass for their spouses and children who are unmarried and are below 21 years of age. A Long-Term Visit Pass may also be applied by the EP holder for his/her Common law spouse, Unmarried daughters above 21 years of age, Handicapped children, Step-children, and Parents/parents-in-law.
