FLOOR OUTLETS INSTALLATION MUST HAVE REVIEWED BY AN ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR

In dealing with floor outlets, it is better if you communicate first with an electrical contractor to avoid problems that may arise after installing faulty wirings.  If you want to do it yourself, you should have basic electrical and wiring knowledge before you begin any job that has to do with floor outlets and that you familiarize yourself with local and national electrical codes. With few a little detective work you will be able to determine what is causing a problem with a floor outlet. Here are 3 easy fixes for electrical floor malfunctions.  Before beginning any work on your outlet, it is imperative that you turn off the power. Often times the breakers are marked by the builder but sometimes they are incorrect. You may have to turn the breakers on and off, one by one, until you locate the correct one for your wire source.  Always be sure to test with a circuit tester to be sure power is off.

Your problem may be as simple as loose connections.  If the wires have come loose because they were not tightened snugly enough or that over time they have loosened due to vibration of the floor, you could have intermittent or total loss of power.  To remedy this you will need to remove the fixture, following all applicable instructions, and check the connections.  Remember that wiring is standard and that white will be attached to white, green to green, etc.  After all connections have been tightened down, replace the outlet and test with a circuit tester.  You will know if you have cured the problem.

If there is a short circuit in your wall you need to repair this quickly as it could lead to a dangerous situation.   Finding where this short may be is a difficult task but fixing it is rather simple.  A tip that there might be a short in the wall is that other lights on the same circuit flicker or even shut off.  A quick and easy way to find the section of the wall where the wiring is shorting is to test all your outlets along the same circuit one by one.  You know for a fact that the outlet in question does not work. Go along methodically from outlet to outlet along the same circuit line and test each outlet.   The wiring problem will be between the last good outlet and the non working one.  Once you have determined where the fault is, you can pull the wires between the two points and install new wiring.

Your floor outlet may simply have lived its lifespan or has worn out over time.  Test with a circuit tester and see if there is power running to it.  If there is not, turn off the power to the outlet at the breaker and remove the outlet from the floor.  Check all connections first to see if perhaps the problem is really a loose connection.  Also test the wires to see if there may be a short in the system. If it is neither, you will probably need to replace the entire outlet.
