A lot has changed in Naperville
After their Oak Grove meeting, the pair began their courtship, according to Evelyn, when she asked Ed on a date. The lace mermaid wedding dressesrelationship flourished over the years.It was 1940, and the world was at war.
“I told her, I am going to be drafted, and I want to marry you when I get back,” Ed said. “Evelyn said she would rather marry me before (I left), and that’s what we did.”
The rest is history. On Nov. 30, 1940, they wed in Chicago, where Evelyn’s family lived, and the couple moved to Naperville. They had a daughter, Renee, in 1942, and six months later, Ed was drafted into the U.S. Army.
“I was in the Army, stationed just outside of Paris during World War II,” Ed said. “I was there for nearly three years.”
That was the longest time the two would spend apart. When he returned from Europe, they went on to have another daughter, Joyce, and a son, Ed Jr., and raised them in the same Naperville home — the couple still lives there.
Naperville was a different town then. James Nichols II was mayor, son of James Nichols, a North Central College professor and library benefactor. The population was a little more than 5,200.
“You knew everyone — Naperville was the kind of place where you would go downtown on a Saturday morning, and everybody knew you by your first name,” Ed said. “I miss that,” Evelyn said. “I liked old Naperville.”
After seven decades, Evelyn has some straightforward advice on what has made their marriage last.
“Have your argument and get over it,” Evelyn said.
And then she shared a story from years ago that still holds true today.
“On our 60th anniversary, a priest came over to our house and asked Eddie if we wanted to renew our vows,” Evelyn said. “Eddie said we didn’t have to because we didn’t break them. I think that’s the secret.”
Now and then
A lot has changed in Naperville, and the world, since Ed and Evelyn wed in 1940. But one thing has remained constant, and that is the love and respect they have cheap wedding shoesfor each other.Ed Doyle Jr. said his parents’ marriage is about “old-fashioned values and commitment.”“My sisters and I know; we have all seen it while growing up,” the son said. “They are best friends.”
