Natural Stone Tiles : A Natural, Homely Look

Natural stones tiles are a good option for tiling, whether it be inside your home or outside of it. They look good, and are both versatile and durable. The price of them has fallen in recent years, and whilst they do cost a bit more than standard ceramic tiles, they offer better value for money.

Travertine, granite and slate are the main types of natural stone tiles available, and what follows is a brief description of each of those types…

Travertine – Coming in a variety of shades of brown, these tiles, which are a form of limestone, look particularly good. They can be used to good effect on both floors and walls and the texture of them can really change the look and feel of a room. The only downside to them is that, due to them being porous and containing lots of tiny holes, they can be affected by constantly coming into contact with water, such as in a bathroom or shower area.

Granite – This is the most commonly used type of natural stone tile, because it is the most durable. Some people think that it does not look nice enough and that there are not enough different styles, but that is really just a case of personal preference. For floors and outdoor purposes, it really is the best option.

Slate – The best choice for walls and countertops, slate tiles are easy to cut and shape. You can also use them for tiling floors, but because they will invariably be slightly different in thickness, an uneven surface can result. They are mostly gray in color, though you can finds them with other others colors mixed in too.

If you want some idea as to what each type of these tiles looks like, and also as to how much each type varies as to color and thickness, then just type ‘travertine tiles, ‘granite tiles’ or ‘slate tiles’ into a Google image search. Alternatively, you can browse the website of a company who specializes in natural stone tiles.

Remember, that using natural stone tiles is not an either / or decision that you have to make. You can use in a mixture of travertine, granite and slate tiles in the same room to very good effect. You do need to exercise some caution though, and should get a second opinion on your design ideas before getting started.
