Ongoing Steps in Continuing Your Dream to Become an Actor

Becoming an actor is a rewarding career, but is not an easy task. However, considering that the available jobs in this field is only limited, anybody who aspires to become one must work hard and must be patient enough to wait for an opportunity to land a job. Thus, anybody who dreams of becoming an actor must first be resolved that indeed, he wants to become one.

Becoming a professional actor is a serious commitment. For this reason, you should make the necessary preparation on your way to fulfilling your dreams. You need to acquire necessary experiences in the field. You don’t need to go to New York or Florida to get started; there are talent agencies in many cities, many with good reputations. Make sure they’re licensed and don’t ask for fees upfront.

Another important thing to consider is acquiring the necessary knowledge in the field of acting. You may need formal schooling by enrolling in an acting class. It is always better if you will have yourself enrolled in a reputable school that offers acting course. You may seek the advice of other people known in the field for your reference.

Ask somebody to take your headshot or model composite. Your headshot is a representation of yourself; hence, it is better to have your headshot taken by a professional. Let your headshot be taken in different poses to give the potential employer an idea of the wide range of appearances and expressions that you can portray.

Compose a resume that will contain, among others, the projects that you have done. Make sure that your resume is comprehensive enough to make its reader be informed of who you are, what you have done and what else can you do. You may eliminate the less professional experience from your resume as you acquire more experience.

Looking for available opportunities follows after all the aforementioned has been done. In doing so, it is important to let prospective employers know of your presence by sending all casting agents and directors of your resume. In cases when no feedback was received, have the patience to wait and remind them of your constant interest by sending them follow-up letters or postcards as often as needed, or maybe, every four or six months. It will be an advantage if your keep them updated of the projects you currently working on.

Keep yourself abreast of what’s happening around. Make it a habit to read trade papers like “Backstage,” “Dramalogue,” “The Ross Reports” and “Variety” and other online publication of the same genre. Be conscious of who is looking around for an actor. Inform them of your interest by sending them your headshot and letter requesting for an audition to directors and producers wherever possible. Talk to your agency; they should point you in the right direction.

Accept invitation to social events such parties and other events related to the field. Take the advantage of attending different functions that will give you good exposure. This is a good venue of meeting other people related to your chosen profession. Finally, persevere. Remember that there is no short cut to success. Your effort may not be compensated at once but in the long run, you will be rewarded.
