Use Of Coffee In Prevention Of Prevalent Diseases

Coffee has two main species: Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora (Zimmer, 2007). Though quite a number of people use coffee for beverage purposes, not many people understand the disease curative and preventive roles that coffee plays. Apart from healing headaches and stimulating the body, coffee reduces the risk of getting prevalent diseases such as cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular illnesses, Parkinson’s disease and neurological related problems (Knasmller et. al., 2009). This research proposal will probe into the components of coffee responsible for these preventive effects in a bid to understand the science behind this issue.
Thesis: Coffee is a scientifically viable preventive drug and if more emphasis is laid on its usage, this beverage could save the world from expensive drugs used for treating prevalent diseases.
Statement
To begin with, the human body produces various products while it continuously engages in metabolism. Some of these products such as uncharged radicals are very unstable; they react uncontrollably leading to cell destruction and as a result, they can cause cancer. Coffee is able to prevent this uncontrollable reactions; coffee has antioxidants such as magnesium and chlorogenic acid which donate electrons to the unstable products of metabolism hence preventing cell damage (Dupas et. al., 2006). In the alimentary canal, chlorogenic acid is absorbed in the ileum and the colon. In the colon, it is converted into caffeic acid; both acids inhibit growth of cancerous cells (Yadegaran, 2009).
Chlorogenic acid has a similar effect in the prevention of heart-related diseases. One of the major causes of heart infections is presence of very high amounts of low density lipoproteins in the body (World Health Organization, 2003). This type of lipid is also known as bad cholesterol; if oxidized, it forms tablets that block blood vessels. Chlorogenic acid prevents this oxidation process from taking place and restores the reduced form of low density lipoproteins; people who take coffee have lower chances of being imperiled by low density lipoproteins (Landseer, 2007).
In diabetic conditions, coffee empowers the body to be able to manage blood glucose levels through its effect on insulin secretion. Chlorogenic acid increases the responsiveness of insulin to blood sugar levels. As a result, if blood sugar levels elevate or decrease, the body is able to produce more or less insulin at a time when it is appropriate.
Taking coffee as a beverage can also have positive effects on the brain specifically on one’s memory (Winslow, 1924). The component of coffee that is responsible for this effect of boosting thinking and understanding capacities is caffeine. Caffeine also shows an active role in prevention of Parkinson’s disease (Ross et. al., 2000).
