Features Of The GoPro Hero Camera Revealed

This is not a technically advanced instrument by any means nor is it cheap, but it cannot be faulted for ease of use. In the interim, before the next range of cameras in this class are introduced, the gopro hero camera may be forgiven for its few weaknesses.

Introduced in 2006 by a team of technical experts and athletes from a northern Californian company called GoPro, they hold the patent from which the device was developed. Searching for an easy to use camera whilst engaging in their favorite sports was the motivation behind the development of the instrument. Other outdoors enthusiasts have welcomed the camera with open arms.

There are three formats of the device on offer. The first group is the Helmet Hero of which the GoPro forms part and is designed for use on the helmets used for cycling, motorcycling and other protective headgear. This version comes supplied with various mounting plates and devices fitted with a quick release mechanism so that it can also be used on kayaks, skis, four wheelers and many more vehicles. The small digital device is waterproof and can capture video with TV quality as well as still photographs and can be set to take one photograph at intervals of 2 seconds for time lapse photography.

A Motor-sports version is available which can be mounted on a variety of vehicles as well as a lightweight waterproof version capable of being strapped to the wrist of an athlete.

Fitting quite literally in the palm of the hand the gadget measures 3.18cm X 4.45cm X 5.84cm and with its see through polycarbonate casing is certified waterproof to a depth of 100 feet. The casing increases the dimensions of the device to a scant 3.30cm X 4.57 cm X 6.60cm. The weight of the entire assembly is just . 13Kg.

Boasting a three megapixel sensor, this gadget produces a picture of 2048 X 1536 pixels at 96 dpi. At its heart is a glass lens of f2.8 and a default setting on auto exposure. It is fitted with 16MB standard memory expandable to 2GB via an SD memory card (not included).

One of the picture modes allows for a burst of 3 shots spaced at intervals of 5 seconds apart together with a 10 second self timing mode enabling the operator to get into the shot. The 2GB SD card can store over 1400 photographs as . JPG files.

Video is recorded at 30 fps with a resolution of 512 X 384 pixels and the claim is that 56 minutes can be recorded when using the 2GB SD card. The video files are stored in the AVI format.

Power is supplied by two AAA alkaline batteries (included) for a quick start-up. GoPro’s recommendation is that NiMH batteries should be used for normal conditions and that Lithium-ion batteries be used in cold conditions. Battery life can be extended using a programmable setting for power usage.

The JPG and AVI files may be downloaded and viewed on Windows 2000, ME or XP systems and also on later versions of MAC OS. Included with the kit is a combination cable featuring mini-USB to USB connectors and RCA connectors for connecting to a PC or a TV. There is a guarantee of one year on manufacturing defects for the GoPro Hero Camera.
