The Emergence of Technology in Youth Education
The old order changes
Like in any other sphere, technology has permeated the area of youth education as well in recent years. Modern technology has penetrated the youth educational system and has dug deep into the system. The funding in the technology up gradation segment in our K 12 schools in the US has increased to about US $7 billion a year. The amount is mainly spent on upgrading the technology infra structure and in purchasing new hardware. It is now common to observe that the younger generation are quite used to working with a computer. The computer has become a useful and unavoidable piece of equipment to the youth. Nevertheless, many teachers still appear to be reluctant, or unable, to include this new technology in the classroom.
Use of the computer
One great advantage of the use of computer in the education of the youth is that the student can study the subject at their own pace and at the time that is most suitable to them. The slow learners can access the class notes even at home and go through the material repeatedly till he gets a good grounding in the subject. The fast learner can jump the lessons and go ahead with his learning an ahead of the general class level. He can also advance his knowledge by gathering fresh information through the internet.
Adult literacy
A survey conducted throughout the United States, however, revealed that even though a large sum of money was spent on upgrading the technology portion of our educational system, this extra input has not in actual terms increased the total literacy level of the country. The National Assessment of the adult literacy has indicated that only an 8 % increase in adult literacy has been recorded in the decade 1992 to 2003. Though the computer is a very useful tool to access knowledge form the internet or through E education, the majority of the youth population in the US use the computer to access the video games and other social activities. It is considered more as a status symbol and an important tool for inter communication rather than for learning.
