Surviving Traumatic Events

In the wake of traumatic events it feels like the world is closing in and nothing makes sense, not even what others tell you or how you feel. It can be very unmanageable in how you feel and think, like nothing is right and you don’t know where to turn.  Yet this moment is when you need direction and answers the most because of the ungrounding nature of the event.

It can feel like you’ve lost your body and are no longer connected to what is real and happening around you. Some call it shock, a disassociating method in order to deal with the stress and unreality of the event. Yet here is where we need to be most grounded and present so that we can come to terms with what has happened and what happened to ourselves.  Here is where truth and honesty can help us the most on the way to recovery and bringing ourselves back to the present.  By letting go of the truth, by turning away from the event, we are not just disassociating from it, but rather laying claim to the fact that it never happened for we wish that to be true.  But events as they happen can not be changed or taken away, only prolonged by the idea that we must keep them away.

It is a hard road to walk down, first trauma and the disassociation, followed by fear and sadness. If we could in that moment, be truly present at whatever stage we are in, we can then allow ourselves to not only grieve but to let go.  The more quickly we are honest with the truth, the event, and our feelings, the sooner we will feel like ourselves again, for that is the most important thing.  By returning to ourselves we can come back to reality and see the moment for what it was and is now.   To fully be in the moment that we are in allows us to be much more free and capable of dealing with everything.  We are then able to accept and find a way to move on and heal.  Moments like these can happen and there is a release in accepting them, not ignoring it or staying inside of the trauma.  Rather acknowledging oneself, the traumatic event, and believing you will be okay and others as well allows you to move forward and to find closure.
