What is IOSH ?

If you’ve started a new position, chances are there was someone at your orientation going over health and safety hazards with you. If your child or teenager came home with more hands-on and real-world curriculum, it was due to an outside factor. And that new campaign regarding health and safety didn’t just become en vogue overnight. Whether you knew it or not, you were getting the IOSH treatment.
It is the self-proclaimed “heart of safety and health.” IOSH. If you work in the public sector, you may have heard of it. If you kept up with current events, you might have read about it as well. And if you have ever injured yourself, then you definitely know what it is. For those who are not familiar with the term, here is a brief explanation of what IOSH is.

What is IOSH?

Located in the United Kingdom, IOSH stands for the Institution of Safety and Health. The non-profit organisation was founded in 1945 and has been a registered charity since 1962. With over 38.000 members in 38 countries, IOSH is the biggest professional health and safety organisation in the world. It specialises in informing the public of hazards in their jobs and the necessary precautions to take to reduce injury or illness.
In 2003, IOSH achieved charter status and since 2005, can assign chartered memberships to its members. Every year, IOSH’s certified trained professionals teach over 100,000 people about making their work environment safer. IOSH also works with the government and lobbyists to help campaign safety and health issues.
IOSH’s main goal – as outlined on their website – is that they’re passionate about protecting people. No one should suffer injury on their job or at school. IOSH’s certified trainers teach people the necessary precautions to take to make sure any foreseeable injuries do not occur.
Martin Leeks, IOSH Vice-Chair, has clearly stated that the organisation’s goal is to manage the environments people work in, analyse risks and take proper measures to minimise them, so that, one day, we won’t hear about people getting injured or even dying while on duty.

Below, you mind find further information on IOSH’s philosophy.

Putting Our Young Workers First

Between 2000-2010, over 60 teenagers were killed at their jobs and nearly 14, 500 suffered major injuries. Partnering with the government, IOSH created Putting Our Young Workers First, a campaign that teaches health and safety in the public classrooms and jobs. IOSH created a website specifically for the cause, Wiseup2Work.co.uk for teachers, students, and anyone who works with young people to become more informed.
Memberships
IOSH has five levels of membership one can attain through the organisation (from lowest-ranking to highest): Affiliate, Technician Member (Tech IOSH), Graduate Member (Grad IOSH), Chartered Member (CMIOSH), Chartered Fellow (CFIOSH). Each category of membership depends on a combination of academic qualifications, experience, and achievements.
