Balmshell

History

Launched in Holt Renfrew’s across Canada in 2006, with what Balmshell considers to be the perfect lip-gloss, using a high-shine non-stick moisturizing formula. The inspiration for the look and unique packaging of the lip-gloss comes from a float art pen the founders Jenny and Fiona purchased in a kitschy shop in Yorkville. Expressed through the colourful illustrations and amusing storylines each of the ten glosses has a unique float-art handle bringing to life the personalities of the varying shades.

By 2008, the Balmshell twins introduced the Smear Campaign, four lip and cheek gel based tints. Carrying forward the experience they gained from launching a successful lip-gloss line, Jenny and Fiona made sure to keep the focus of the product on a combination of high quality ingredients and fun and flirty packaging.

The line is now successfully selling in Shoppers Drug Mart, Murale, and London Drugs stores across Canada. It can also be found online at Sephora and Balmshell websites.

Press

Balmshell does not believe in large scale advertising efforts, and relies heavily on word of mouth advertising and press opportunities. Balmshell has been featured in a number of publications such as Flare, FASHION, Cosmopolitan, Vanity Fair, and Women Wear Daily. It has also gained exposure through numerous media outlets including the Donny Deutsch Show, The Shopping Channel and inclusion in the 2007 Oscar and Grammy Gift bags.

About the Founders

With no experience in the cosmetic industry the sisters decided to take on the industry and with determination, hard work, and a lot of style they turned their dream into a reality. Since then, Jennifer and Fiona Lees have been named two of Cosmopolitan Fun Fearless Females in 2007. The twins show no sign of slowing down as they continue adding new and exciting products to the Balmshell line.

About the Illustrator

Mar Murube was born in Seville, Spain. She was brought up in a cosmopolitan environment, getting to know several European cities. She began drawing from her very early days, astonishing everyone with her creativity. By the time she was four, her drawings were up to high school par. After graduating, Mar Murube started working as a graphic designer for several advertising agencies, until 2004, when she decided to concentrate on what she really enjoyed and became a full-time illustrator.

Within a few months of entering the field, Mar Murube requested by Vogue Italia to illustrate a six-page story, which opened the door to similar jobs in Europe and North America. Today her name has become well known in the fashion industry and her work can be seen in magazines from all over the world like Tatler, Elle, Brides, Marie Claire and In Style. Her illustrations also appear in book covers, products, posters and advertising campaigns, such as the latest packaging of Zara’s Textures and the new cosmetic brand Balmshell.
