Finnish design in the future

The stability of the Finnish design’s success is based on education and young designers. Since the late 1980s, young designers – with Stefan Lindfors in the forefront – have brought many fresh ideas to the field of Finnish design. Experiments with materials, new housing concepts and a new way of living has given new forms in Finnish design implementation. For example the Snowcrash group which formed in the late 1990s, was a good example of open-minded design in the spirit of the times.

Awards and competitions are used to support improvements in the field of design and also to lift up the profile of high-quality designs. The Fennia Prize competition is the biggest worldwide design competition which is held in Finland. The competition is held in every two years. Over the years the competition has established its place and it has brought about many success stories from different fields of manufacturing.

Design has importance in both cultural and economic terms. Finnish design’s cultural significance is in creating and maintaining national identity as well as individual identity. It is also part of Finns’ memory and history. The bright and happy fabrics of Marimekko in 1960s were part of many Finns’ childhood and their parents’ generation has good memories of Kilta tableware. Finland is known around the world for, for example, Alvar Aalto, Jean Sibelius and Finnish design.

In international competition, images, reputations, myths and stories have their own place. They all further a strong image of talent and long tradition and they also reflect originality as well as uniqueness. Finnish design’s cultural importance is part of that which makes it economically important. In the final analysis, cultural strength is based on precise design and therefore it is in the hands of the skilled designers. Nowadays products are most of the time supported by a team of highly talented professionals and experts. Their visions and skills will create the successful design of tomorrow.

Success equals trust but trust can only be built by reality and talent. Finnish industry’s products and talents boost international trust in the Finnish industry which is the main point of success in business. Finnish design is part of this chain of expertise, trust and success because of its strong myth.
