Installation And Maintenance Of Rubber Flooring

Rubber flooring is a safety staple in any gym or martial arts studio. The soft, dense material is quickly and easily installed over any existing floor to create an impact-absorbing cushion. There is a wide range of benefits to investing in this affordable option that made it popular in many workout rooms and children’s play areas. It is easy to maintain and sanitary, and prevents serious injury that can occur from slipping on hard surfaces during exercise.

Rubber flooring is usually installed within a day and may be done manually without the use of any tools. It will be important to measure the room that is being floored, so the mat may be cut to fit, if necessary. A special type of adhesive will cement the material to the floor. If there is a rug or a carpet already in place, it will need to be cut on the edges with a knife and pulled up. Many of these floor tiles interlock with each other and can be easily laid out. Others will come in a roll that may be cut to fit as needed. Be sure to lay each piece flat to avoid air bubbles underneath.

Once installed, the freshly adhered mats must be left alone for about 72 hours, or 3 days, so it may be properly set. If the mats are stepped on, they may shift and lay unnaturally. If the mats are laid in a high traffic area, we recommend that they are only laid in half of the room, so that there is always a path to walk on as the adhesive sets.

Most liquids are repelled by rubber flooring. Spills can be cleaned up with a damp paper towel. Any dust and dirt can be easily swept up or vacuumed, and if needed, or picked up with a lint brush.

To remove gum from rubber flooring, place an ice cube directly on the wad of gum for about 30 seconds to harden it. Then, carefully scrape it away with a wooden spoon. It may be necessary to use a metal scraper or a fork if it will not budge, however, this could create scratches on the surface of the mat. Other sticky substances, such as oil, can be cleaned by sweeping some salt or sawdust over the floor and vacuuming it away.

Special cleaning products are not necessary, and harsh chemicals such as acetate could cause discoloration on some mats. A simple solution of a mild cleaning product diluted with water should be used to wipe down the surface with a damp mop.

In some cases, you will want to seal your rubber flooring to further repel spills and dirt. Products are available that can create a seal that is painted over the tiles and set to dry. This will also make the floor less susceptible to scratches or dents.

Rubber flooring is easy to clean and low maintenance. It creates a safer workout environment by absorbing impact and preventing slipping and skidding. This affordable solution is great for everyday use in any home, gymnasium, or workout studio.
