Learning to be a Better Life Coach

The majority of us have heard the term “Life Coach” and have at least some idea of what it is that a life coach does. The basic job of a life coach is to work with their clients to teach them how to empower their lives, feel good about themselves and to build the self-confidence needed to achieve the goals that they have both worked hard to create.

Each life coach is likely to have a different teaching method based on their own experiences and any formal training that they may have received. Not all life coaches receive formal training and to date there are no certifications required in order to be a life coach, advertise your services and charge people for them, however, this may change in the very near future as more states begin to look at this as an actual occupation similar in nature to being a therapist.

There are several different schools of thought regarding a life coach’s approach to helping his clients. However, no matter whether a life coach uses a purely clinical approach, a meditative or Buddhist approach or a combination of the two, they all offer some form of psychological training that is intended to help the client learn to see themselves in a much more positive light so that they can become more successful.

More life coaches are turning to the eastern style teaching as they lean more towards helping the person find that inner center from which all life forces are thought to flow. It is this life force that can be used to reinforce the positive aspects in their lives so that they can overcome the negatives. Only when a person does this can they actually learn to master the rest of their lives and achieve their goals.

While many of these programs are called “self-help” programs, they are successful because of the hard work of both the life coach and the client together. Often the client already knows what they need to be doing in order to reach their goals, other times they feel overwhelmed and fail to set attainable goals.  A little guidance and many find the track to success has been right in front of them all the time, they just could not see it for all of the confusion camouflaging it.

This confusion is often the result of a life that is filled with too many little stressors, that when combined can leave the person completely unable to focus on the true path. Hence the reason that a more holistic approach is often the best approach. When you teach a person the secret to meditation, you are not trying to change their religion, you are simply teaching them how to calm their mind and throw out all of the trash and clutter.

Once you have taught your client to do this, they can begin to focus more clearly on the task at hand, which is to find that strong and successful person that each of us has inside of us. The problem for most people is that this person often gets lost in the clutter of everyday insecurities and fears. By teaching your client to clear their mind as is done in meditation, they can find this personality and then learn to nurture it and allow it to grow.

It is here that a more clinical approach can take over as you will be able teach your client a series of self-help exercises that they can practice on a daily basis. By implementing these exercises, your client will slowly learn to see themselves in a more positive light. If you cannot teach them to do this first, then your chances of helping them achieve the level of success they are capable of are slim.

You will find that just telling a person that they are “great, strong or better than this” is not going to be much use. Your job as a life coach is to teach your clients to find this out for themselves through a more holistic approach.  In order to achieve real success, your client must find this out for themselves through the training you offer.

This is the key to the Hu Method taught to life coaches at the Holistic Learning Center. Developed by Hu Dalconzo this approach combines eastern meditative methodology with modern clinical teachings that the life coach must first learn to use on themselves. After this, the life coach is better prepared to go to his clients and pass what he has learned on so that they too can achieve their maximum potential.
