Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee & Kopi Luwak Coffee – an Overview

There are several brands of coffee in the world and you savour them for various qualities that they may have such as their aroma, their strength or their typical flavour and after-taste. However, there are only a handful of coffees that are termed rare coffees and others that are termed exotic coffees and these are both highly treasured and spoken about in the best of coffee drinking circles around the world. One of these rare coffees is the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee that’s got a great combination of aroma, body and acidity. The other rare coffees are the Kona coffee that’s grown in just 150 acres of land in Hawaii and the Kopi Luwak coffee that’s grown in India and Indonesia besides Sumatra and Philippines. The latter is rare as well as famous for an entirely quaint reason.

Kopi Luwak coffee is famous because of the manner in which this coffee is intertwined with a shy creature known as the civet cat or the Luwak. This breed of cats has a great amount of greed for the sweet and red coffee cherries that have the beans inside them. The Luwak are nocturnal cats and these eat the cherries and digest them but the beans pass through the stomach without being chewed. During the passage of the beans through the stomach of the civet cat these are fermented in the gastric juices of the Luwak. The Kopi Luwak coffee acquires a typical taste and aroma due to this fermentation process. It’s understood that the enzymes actually add to the flavour by removing any bitterness that may remain. The beans are washed hygienically after collection and roasted very lightly in order to preserve the complex flavours of the coffee. The other rare coffee of great repute is the Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee.

The Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is popular not only due to its perfect balance among body, acidity and aroma but also for the mellow sweet aftertaste that in effect separates this brand from all the others. Historically this coffee has been grown in Jamaica since just after 1750 in only about 200 acres of land.
