Guide to Making Postcards out of Photographs

Old or favorite photographs can easily be turned to personalized postcard samples. Whilst you can buy postcards in different sizes such as 5×6 postcards in your local bookstore or souvenir shops, you can collate some of your best pictures and make them in to great postcard samples. Go through your vacation, adventure or family pictures. Select the ones you think will be great as postcards.

Here’s how to make postcards out of photographs:

1.    Store all the photographs you want to use in one file. Use a photo editing software to resize them. Postcard samples sent through U.S. Standard Mail must not be less than 3.5 inches in length and 5 inches in width. The maximum size allowed is 11.5 inches in length and 6.125 inches in width. So if you intend to have a 5×6 postcard, you should not worry about postal office not allowing it. It’s only with U.S. First Class Mail that the size regulation is more restrictive.

2.    Buy a cardstock photo paper and use it for printing the photographs. This kind of paper is normally heavier than the standard paper. Or if you’re using your old printed film photographs, you can paste each of them to a piece a same size cardstock. You can do this by using decoupage glue.

3.    Include clear contact paper in your material purchase for this project. Cut a piece which should be slightly larger than the postcard sample size. Remove its backing. This type of paper is used to protect the photograph postcard sample when sent in the mail.

4.    On top of the contact paper’s sticky side, put the postcard sample face down. Run your hand or a tool that will help in smoothing out air bubbles underneath the contact paper. Remove the contact paper’s hanging edges.

5.    Turn the postcard sample with the blank side facing you. On the left side, you can write your message. On the right side should be the recipient’s address and the stamp.

6.    Proceed to the postal office. Your photograph postcard sample is ready for mailing. Depending on your postcard size sample, you can either go for the U.S. Standard Mail or the U.S. First Class Mail.

Make sure you have great photos to turn in to postcard samples. Play with the sizes, too. Instead of the standard size, use other sizes such as 5×6 postcards. You’ll never know how your recipient will keep them. They might have the 5×6 postcard as a decoration on their wall. A nice picture frame will surely make the photograph stand out as one of their wall displays.
